What is ethical?

Daily writing prompt
What are you most worried about for the future?

There is no future, only now. Having said that, the biggest challenge I see for humanity in our little corner of the universe is that our ethical understanding is not keeping apace with technological advancement.

We can now keep people’s bodies alive longer, even when it is fairly clear the whole person we knew will never be with us again; when is it appropriate to let a person die? Who gets to make that decision? Who can have access to these life prolonging medical technologies?

We can make some physical modifications to people and are on the edge of genetic modification; what are the ramifications of doing so? Is it appropriate to choose gender or eye color? Is access to life-saving genetic work only for those who can afford it?

We have artificial intelligence widely available and my teacher friends are having to pay attention to determine if students are actually writing papers they represent as their own; when should humans do their own actual work? When will the collaboration become anticipation?

We have begun to trust so much in the anticipated technology of the future that we do not care to take care of the now, of this moment. We are neglecting destroying the only place in this universe where we can all live. Now is when we must be asking the questions of how to respond to the crises facing humanity.

I think we need to pay attention to the ethics as much as the advancing knowledge. And we need to do so now.
