Making Breakfast

Describe one habit that brings you joy.

Every morning that I am home, I arise with my wife and while she is gone on a walk with our dog, I make breakfast. It is simple fare; we share oatmeal and coffee together. I am thankful as I measure out the water and then set it to boiling. I measure the oats and add it to the boiling water. While that is in process, I sett the kettle to heat the water for our pour-over coffee.

When she returns from her walk and feeds the dog, we sit down together (sometimes with our son or other house guests) and she in this gift which will sustain us through the morning and into the afternoon, a gift which is the food we share and also the sustaining relationships that connect us with one another and the world.

I love that I can make breakfast, that we can share it, that it sustains us as does the ineffable character of relationship. Gratitude and joy are interwoven in this daily ritual.
