What profession do you admire most and why?
I admire the work of psychotherapists in helping people find ways to cope with their trauma and life challenges. I benefitted greatly from the therapeutic process in dealing with life events from my past in ways that helped me live daily less like I was on a rollercoaster- up, down, and always jarring.
I admire the work; I also believe it is a starting place. Most therapy helps us deal with a challenge in an adult way and accept that it does not define us. Additionally, most therapy of which I am aware leaves off with developing more adult coping mechanisms in place of the ones we developed as children, the ones that kept us alive and protected us.
Beyond a behavioral therapy, I am intrigued by Jungian depth psychology about which I have read extensively. This therapy seeks to to assist in discerning more about our meaning in life, helping the one in therapy to access more of the unconscious that patterns our lives.
If therapy is an excellent starting place, a next step might be something along the lines of a meditation practice; I have found my centering prayer/meditation practice has let me release/let go and find a deep healing.
I wish that therapy did not carry such a stigma in our society. While therapy is gaining greater acceptance generally, there are still segments in society that view therapy with disdain, suspicion, and/or as a weakness (quite the opposite!).
I admire the profession of psychotherapy and the work that goes into becoming a therapist as well as the courage and work it takes to enter a therapy relationship.
