Work-Life: A Do-Over Post

Daily writing prompt
List three jobs you’d consider pursuing if money didn’t matter.

I already posted an answer to this prompt; however, the essence of the question stuck with me after I left the computer: if money didn’t matter. My original post focused on my own work life, settling on a self-congratulatory, “I would take the job I have.” I want to explore the question a bit more; hence I am writing another post less than hour after posting the first one!

If you or I would consider some three other possible occupations if money did not matter, perhaps we need to look seriously at changing directions now.

  • Who says money matters so much?
  • How important is finding fulfillment at work?
  • How much does money matter to me?
  • Is work my living-costs with fulfillment coming from elsewhere?
  • Can I find ways to move toward discovering a greater sense of accomplishment?
  • Is what I am doing for work making the difference I want to make?

I stand by this quote from my last post:

Choosing work is about finding our passion and matching that passion with the needs of the world and our giftedness.

-me

Then, my questions become:

  • What is my passion?
  • What are the needs of the world?
  • What gifts do I bring to the mix?
  • What skills can I begin to develop that will help me move toward fulfilling work?
  • Am I willing to risk doing what might make a difference?
  • Can I afford to do any less?

Doing what we are called to do (vocation) may change over a lifetime as our skills develop, our passions become more focused or more diffuse, the needs of the world change, and we become more or less risk-averse. Life is filled with meaning. Living meaningful lives, doing what we see as ours to do, this is worth exploring! Don’t be afraid to try again or differently. Failing forward is a great way to learn!

If there is even one thing you or I would do if money didn’t matter, let us ponder what it would look like to do that.. I appreciate practicality; I also believe each of us can make a difference if we live into our gifts and passion.
