Seeking Peace and Wholeness

Every morning, I find myself seated in this chair, or another, when I’m elsewhere. I’ve come to anticipate that sitting here will usher in a sense of inner peace, enabling me to face life’s chaos with greater ease. Gradually, I’m realizing that neither the chair nor its location is magical. The practice itself is just that – practice.

The peace and wholeness I yearn for already exist within me. Beneath the tumultuous waves of uncertainty lies a calm sanctuary. This tranquility is a part of me, always present. Who would have thought? Even now, as I write these words and sync with my breathing, the peace I sought externally surfaces. It envelops me, reminiscent of the sun’s embrace on a cloudless day.

The world, I acknowledge, is engulfed in turmoil. As a part of this world, I too am battered by these waves, both consciously and unconsciously. The pain is palpable, often paralyzing. For a long time, I fancied myself a healer of all wounds. Now, I understand that my role is to create space and to act within my capacity, wherever I am. Our actions, however small, send ripples through the chaos. A kind gesture, a moment of grace, a smile, or simply being present – these acts subtly transform the essence of the day for everyone on this planet, and perhaps even beyond.

Journaling, both privately and here, broadens my understanding of what, deep down, I already know. It’s a process of rediscovery. In my morning centering prayer and meditation, I find the strength to let go of my desires. The turmoil within me and in the world resembles a riptide: I can either struggle against it, exhausting myself, or float with it until it releases me. There are times to swim against the current, and times to surrender to it, allowing us to connect with and uplift others in the same struggle.

Oh, this wild and wondrous world, brimming with beauty and brokenness. We are intrinsically connected to it and to each other. Can we, amidst the riptide of chaos, cling to each other and be collectively carried to a place where our inner peace heals not only ourselves but also the world?

So, today, I remain alert, ready to notice those adrift in the currents. Perhaps I’ll extend a hand, grateful for the companionship in this journey.
