Second Day of Christmas: Awe

On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: a startlement. Sometimes, the unexpected graces our lives, especially when we cling to preconceived notions about forthcoming events.

My wife, Linda, found an opportunity for five of us to attend a one-man performance of ‘A Christmas Carol.’ Having experienced around five film adaptations and several stage renditions of this classic, I harbored doubts about the capacity of a single performer to do justice to this meaningful story. Yet, I was in for a delightful twist. The show was not only fabulous but probably closer to the original spirit intended by Charles Dickens himself.

In its fourteenth year, the same actor had faithfully brought this story to life annually. It was less about watching a play and more about being drawn into a narrative that captivated the imagination far beyond what I had anticipated. It was a splendid chance to rediscover the themes of sharing and transformation in life.

The performance also served as a reminder of the limitations I impose on myself and others through expectations. By doing so, I risk missing the awe of moments poised to burst into my consciousness.

The lessons of the evening included:

  • Release any notion that expectations can control the future.
  • Remain open to the awe each moment may hold.
  • Recognize that life itself is a gift.
  • The world and every moment are brimming with hidden beauty, waiting to be uncovered.

I wish for you moments of awe, today and every day.
