Embracing the Little Kindnesses

This week, I want to turn attention to a seemingly small but deeply transformative virtue: kindness.

The Power of Small Acts

Kindness often gets overshadowed by more dramatic gestures, but it’s often the small, everyday acts that often make the biggest impact. Whether it’s holding the door open for someone, offering a genuine smile, or simply saying “hello,” these little moments can change not just our day, but the world around us. As I mentioned in the past, my parents often share stories of the kindness of strangers who help them with their groceries. These small acts of consideration bring me great comfort, especially when I can’t be there, because they remind me that there is still so much goodness in the world.

A Wedding Celebration of Kindness

Just yesterday, I had the joy of officiating Brandon and Helen’s wedding. The entire day was a celebration of kindness—from the thoughtful goody bags prepared for guests to the heartfelt words of gratitude exchanged at the reception. These moments reminded me of the power of community and how small acts of kindness can uplift and connect us, forming the bonds that make life so meaningful.

Kindness as Love Without Control

One powerful way to think about kindness is through the lens of Stanley Hauerwas, who describes it as “love without control.” Kindness is about giving freely without the expectation of anything in return. This idea resonates deeply with the words of Ephesians 4:32: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” The kindness we are called to embody isn’t about controlling outcomes or responses—it’s about embodying love in its purest, most selfless form.

Practical Ways to Practice Kindness

  1. Observe Kindness Around You: This week, take a moment to watch how people interact. Notice the small acts of kindness happening around you—someone holding the door, giving up their seat, or offering a kind word. These moments are reminders of the quiet goodness woven into the fabric of everyday life.
  2. Engage in Little Acts of Kindness: Look for opportunities to be kind without expecting anything in return. Whether it’s letting someone go ahead of you in line, holding the elevator for a stranger, or simply offering a word of encouragement, these small gestures have the power to make a big difference.
  3. Listen and Be Present: When someone responds with more than just “fine” when you ask how they are, take the time to really listen. In our fast-paced world, your presence and attention could be the lifeline they need.

The Ripple Effect of Kindness

Now imagine if everyone practiced just a little more kindness. The ripple effect could transform not just individual lives but entire communities, fostering peace, understanding, and goodwill. Kindness is the bridge that connects us, making it one of the most essential fruits of the Spirit.

As we go about our week, let’s embrace the call to be kind. Remember, walking the path of Jesus happens one encounter, one moment, and one act of kindness at a time. This week, let’s choose to be the difference in someone’s life.
