Letting Go in Times of Uncertainty

Hello, beloved. How are you today? And I really mean that—how are you truly? Not just the surface-level “fine,” but from the depths of your being.

If you’re anything like most of us, you’ve probably found yourself carrying concern, even anxiety, about events in the world—be they global, local, or deeply personal. Life is full of uncertainty, and uncertainty has a way of manifesting in our minds and bodies. Perhaps it’s a tightening in your stomach, tension in your shoulders, or a quickening heartbeat as your thoughts race.

So today, I want to invite you to pause. Wherever you are, take a moment to check in with yourself. Feel your breath. Notice the places in your body that are holding tension. Let’s practice being gentle with ourselves in the midst of whatever concerns we carry.

Doing What Is Yours to Do

There’s wisdom in recognizing what is—and isn’t—ours to do. A story from the life of St. Francis of Assisi has been resonating with me lately. Near the end of his life, he told his friars, “I have done what is mine to do. Now you must do what is yours to do.”

What does that mean for us? It means taking stock of the actions that are ours to take—the steps we can reasonably accomplish—and then releasing what lies beyond our control. Have you done what is yours to do today? If so, can you allow yourself to let go of the rest?

In times of uncertainty, it’s tempting to overextend ourselves—worrying about outcomes, borrowing trouble from the future, or getting caught in the endless cycle of “what if.” But worry doesn’t change outcomes; it only depletes us.

The Practice of Letting Go

Letting go doesn’t mean apathy. It means acknowledging the limits of our influence, trusting that we’ve done our part, and then releasing our grip on what we cannot change.

It’s a practice, not a one-time decision. When you notice your fists clenched, your shoulders tense, or your breath shallow, pause. Breathe deeply. Let yourself exhale fully, as though you’re releasing the weight of what you’ve been carrying.

In these moments, remind yourself: I have done what is mine to do.

Staying Present

One of the hardest things in uncertain times is to remain present. But being present is where we find grounding. The practice of presence allows us to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.

Presence also creates space for compassion—for ourselves and for others. As you listen to your own concerns, remember that others, too, are carrying burdens. If you can, extend kindness to someone else today. Kindness has a way of rippling outward, creating connections that anchor us when life feels unsteady.

You Are Infinitely Precious

No matter what you’re facing, I want you to know this: You are infinitely precious and unconditionally loved for the gift you are. Your life matters. Your thoughts, your feelings, your voice—they all matter.

In the midst of uncertainty, hold onto that truth. Take time to slow down, breathe deeply, and listen to your heart. Let go of what you cannot change, and step into the peace that comes from knowing you’ve done your part.

You are unrepeatable in all the universe. Be the gift that you are today. Be kind to yourself and to those around you.

Remember: You are infinitely precious and unconditionally loved.
