Do you practice religion?

Religion is from the Latin ‘religare’ meaning to bind together, perhaps even to re-bind. In many ways that is what I am learning to practice.

I began a long journey of “binding together” (practicing religion) as a follower of the path of Jesus. In the early days of that journey, I was more interested the in “rules” and “codes” that would lead me to a fuller life; it seemed unimaginable that I already had a full life if I was simply awake to the fullness.

I think the codes and rules may be the beginnings for all religion, that where we start may not be the place we ultimately reach. What began for me as a complex, multi-tiered repetition of statements about the Infinite Mystery, has transformed to Knowing this Mystery as part of all life. I thought religion was taking something up; now it seems a letting-go, a gentle releasing, and a deep knowing that I was always “bound up” as a piece of Everything-That-Is. For too long I imagined I could be in some way completely separate; now I see this is not true.

So I practice seeing connection and synchronicity and serendipity as part of an eternally bound inter-relatedness. I recognize more and more that I am body/intellect/feeling, a complete package which is part of a much larger complete package that is ever expanding. In momentsEverything is expanding beyond imagination. I am an infinitely precious and unconditionally loved unique piece of that just as I am; so is everyone and everything else.

I practice seeing that I and everything and everyone is already Bound Together, part of the Great Unfolding.
