A Day Without Agenda

How do you relax?

Sabbath. Every Friday is a day set aside for personal rest. The key to keeping it relaxing is to keep myself from forming some list of items that must be accomplished on that day.

Relax and release are closely related words for me. Most of the days of my week seem to be dictated by schedule and accomplishment and lists and some kind of desire to control the day.

Fridays, my sabbath, are days I practice releasing my desire to control the time. Instead of getting caught up in measurable time (Kronos in Biblical Greek), I release myself to experience whatever arises; I experience that as a fuller gift of time in the present (Kairos in Biblical Greek).

Life is such a beautiful and sometimes under-appreciated gift. Friday’s are the day I let myself be reminded of gift of living, let myself receive the day and its moments a gifts, and let myself be present without agenda to the gift arising.

Relaxing takes practice; For me that practice finds form in sabbath.
