No One Here By That Name

What’s your priority tomorrow?

A cheery smile greets me as I arrive.
“Today is my name,” they say with a hopeful, helpful smile.
“I’m here to see Tomorrow,” I say.
Looking a bit bewildered but still smiling, Today says, “There is no one here by that name.”
“Wait. Let me see Yesterday then. Yesterday, I worked out all plans for Tomorrow,” I say, ready to get to thee bottom of this debacle .
“Yesterday has gone, with no plans of returning,” says Today, now with an uneasy smile. “I am the only one here.”
“But I worked out all those beautiful dreams and wishes for Tomorrow.” Feeling a bit dejected, my voice sounded exasperated even to me; now my expression showed bewilderment. Tomorrow just has to be here!
Today perked up. “Let’s talk about those dreams and wishes; perhaps we can do something about them here and now!”

(I was feeling a bit playful this morning so I created this imaginary conversation.)

I have no priority for tomorrow. I will address tomorrow when tomorrow becomes today. Today my priority is to be present in each moment, one moment at a time. Today will invite my very best effort from me in every arising second, making careful and wise choices.

I am not against planning for the future. I set appointments and type items into the boxes and the lines in calendars. However, there is no way to set a priority for tomorrow without knowing what might be done today.

Quite frankly, not getting caught up in tomorrow gives today a spaciousness. There are lists with items to be completed. If some of the items are important and incomplete at the end of day, chances are whatever is most important will be tomorrow’s priority. Jesus taught, “So do not worry about tomorrow. Let tomorrow worry about itself. Living faithfully is a large enough task for today.” (Matthew 6:34, The Voice)

Being here is challenging work. I will face tomorrow when it arises.
