Finding and Manifesting Goodness in Our Lives

This week, I found myself reflecting deeply on the concept of goodness—how it manifests in my life and the lives of those around me. It became a journey of discovery, filled with meaningful conversations and moments of introspection. One such moment occurred during a class I taught on healthy relationships, where we discussed trust, respect, and boundaries. Listening to others share their journeys, and sharing my own, became a profound experience of goodness. It was a beautiful reminder that despite our diverse paths, we all wrestle with similar challenges, and goodness often emerges through those shared experiences.

Amid life’s challenges, such as the devastation wrought by hurricanes or the noise of misinformation, I sought to live in goodness, to hold on to that which is pure and life-giving. This week, I invite you to join me in a two-part assignment: to look for the goodness already present in your life and to actively manifest it in the world around you.

Understanding Goodness Through Scripture

As I explored the concept of goodness, I turned to Galatians 5:22-23, which speaks of the fruits of the Spirit. The Greek word for “goodness” in this passage can also be translated as “generosity,” highlighting a dual nature—both the intrinsic goodness that lives within us and its outward expression in our actions toward others.

Micah 6:8 offers another powerful directive on what God considers good: “Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.” These are active ways of engaging with the world, reminding us that goodness is not simply an internal quality but also something we must choose to live out. The call to justice, kindness, and humility invites us to manifest goodness in tangible ways, every day.

The Challenge of Manifesting Goodness

Our natural inclination is often to focus on the negative—it’s how our brains are wired. Neuroscience tells us that our minds latch onto negativity almost immediately, while it takes longer to appreciate the good. Yet, as Christians, we are called to rise above that tendency and focus on manifesting goodness, even when it doesn’t come easily.

The idea of goodness is embedded in our very creation. In Genesis, God calls all of creation “good.” This inherent goodness is part of the divine image within us. Yet, we are not only meant to possess goodness—we are called to express it. It’s one thing to recognize goodness in ourselves, but it’s another to actively live it out through our actions and interactions with others.

Cultivating Goodness in Daily Life

Living out goodness can be challenging, especially when life doesn’t go as planned. I experienced this firsthand during what should have been a relaxing dinner outing. While the meal was delicious, I found my patience tested, and expressing goodness in my interactions became a struggle. It’s a reminder that none of us are perfect, and sometimes we will fall short. But even in those moments, we have the opportunity to reflect, grow, and strive to do better next time.

Like a garden, the fruits of the Spirit, including goodness, require ongoing care and attention. It takes time, effort, and intentionality to cultivate these qualities in our lives. This week, I encourage you to take some time to reflect on the goodness within you and how you can express it generously to those around you, even in small, everyday ways.

Your Assignment: Embrace and Share Goodness

This week, I challenge you to pause and identify the unique goodness that resides within you. Is it your capacity to listen deeply? Your generosity? Your kindness? Once you’ve recognized this, think about how you can share that goodness with others. It could be through acts of kindness, offering support to someone in need, or simply holding space for another person in prayer. Whatever it may be, let your goodness shine brightly in your interactions.

As you go about this, remember the wisdom of Micah 6:8: do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Whether you succeed or stumble, remember that God continually invites us to manifest goodness in the world. Together, let’s embrace this journey of seeking and sharing the goodness that reflects God’s image within each of us.
