If you’ve ever found yourself yearning for simplicity in the midst of life’s complexities, you’re not alone. Simplicity is a concept that many of us aspire to, but what does it truly mean? And how do we live simply in a world that often feels anything but simple?
As I reflected on this, I realized something paradoxical: the act of “adding” simplicity to our lives can sometimes make things more complicated. Consider this example from my own life: I once tried to simplify cooking in my kitchen by investing in various appliances. A food processor seemed like the perfect solution for saving time and effort. But after the chopping, assembling, cleaning, and storing, I was left wondering: had I actually made life simpler, or just exchanged one complexity for another?
This realization led me to question the very nature of simplicity. What if simplicity isn’t about acquiring more tools or techniques to streamline life but rather about letting go of what isn’t essential? Instead of asking, What can I add? perhaps we should be asking, What can I release?
Defining Simplicity
Simplicity is not a one-size-fits-all concept. For some, it might mean having more time for what matters most. For others, it could mean living with fewer possessions or paring down a busy schedule. At its heart, simplicity asks us to clarify our ultimate values—the core around which we want to build our lives.
So, what’s most important to you? What gives your life meaning? These are the questions that guide us toward simplicity.
In this relatively new year, I’ve started asking myself these very questions. I’ve made a list of the things I spend my time and energy on, and I’m examining them through a new lens:
• Does this activity align with my values?
• Does it bring meaning or joy?
• Is it something only I can do, or can it be let go of or shared?
This process isn’t about adding more to my life. Instead, it’s about pruning—removing what distracts me from what truly matters.
Living from Your Gift
Simplicity invites us to focus on the gift we already are. Each of us carries a divine spark, a unique calling to contribute to the world. When we align our lives with this gift, simplicity naturally follows.
Think of it this way: your life is finite. You only have so much time, energy, and attention to give. If you try to spread yourself thin across too many pursuits, you risk losing sight of your purpose. But when you ground yourself in what matters most—whether that’s meaningful relationships, creative work, or spiritual growth—you’ll find that simplicity isn’t something you add to your life. It’s something you uncover as you let go of the unnecessary.
An Invitation
As you move through this year, I invite you to take some time to reflect. Ask yourself:
• What is most important to me?
• How am I spending my time, energy, and resources?
• What can I release to live more in alignment with my values and gifts?
Remember, simplicity isn’t about perfection or living with nothing. It’s about living with intention—building your life around what truly matters and letting the rest fall away.
And as you journey through these reflections, never forget: you are infinitely precious and unconditionally loved for the gift you already are.
