You Define Preciousness

You are incomparable.

Sometimes it seems everything gets its value through comparing to to something else; for example, gold is valued as a more precious metal than iron (unless you want to make steel in which case gold is fairly useless except to trade for iron). We seem to see everything as an exclusively either/or rather than an inclusively both/and.

In a world where perception is based on differentiation and comparison, what makes you precious may seem be a commodity that can be compared with what makes someone else precious.

You are precious because you are you; your preciousness cannot be compared to the preciousness of someone or something else. Each and every piece of the universe is precious for being itself. And you are a piece of this universe.

How do you respond to that? Do you have a sense that you are precious? If you say to yourself, “I am precious,” what arises within you? Is there a “but” or “if” or “except that?” From where is any sense of denial coming? Is there some voice within that questions your preciousness? What is telling you that you could be anything less than precious?

Do you find yourself saying, “Of course I am,” at the same time recognizing that you are only trying to convince yourself and everyone else of something you do not know to be true? Does some comparison between you and an other immediately arise? For me, what arises becomes a prompt for me in my journal as I seek to plumb the depths of what brings me to imagine I am other than precious. Perhaps this could be such a moment to reflect for you as well.
